It’s Summa-Summa-Summertime!
The beginning of Summer is probably one of my favorite times of year.
…and that’s all I have to say about that.
It’s Summa-Summa-Summertime!
The beginning of Summer is probably one of my favorite times of year.
…and that’s all I have to say about that.
So. I am about to graduate from college. This is… huge. So huge, I am not even sure that I have words to wrap around it. So- I suppose instead I will focus on something related, but not quite as huge: my portfolio review.
As part of the graduation requirement, I had to have my portfolio reviewed by the head of the department. I’ve spent the past week deliberating over which pieces to include – the majority of which were Starry Knights pages, actually – but when I woke up this morning, I did not have a physical portfolio to put my pieces into. I thought I’d had a portfolio, but found out on Tuesday that the I’d had was too small, and I spent all of Wednesday running around like a crazy person and didn’t have time to go to the store and buy a new portfolio. So- today I woke up at the crack of dawn, and went to the nearest art store as soon as it opened – had researched this information last night, as well as the opening times of the second and third closest art stores, just in case – and went to the store and bought a portfolio. And then went home and put all of my pieces in the portfolio. And that was it.
I had allowed so much time for things to go wrong that when nothing went wrong, I had two hours to kill. It was strange.
I ended up meeting up with a couple friends (who also had their portfolio reviews today) at a bar around the corner from the class building about a half hour for class, wherein we proceeded to, er, ingest some liquid courage in preparation for the review.
And, here’s the thing: my review actually went really, really well, to my pleasant surprise. It’s just- today has been absolutely categorically insane, because nothing has gone wrong. Don’t get me wrong- I am quite happy about that fact. It’s just that I am so used to every little thing going wrong in some unexpected way at every opportunity, that when I work hard and everything goes according to plan and the hard work pays off in exactly the way I expected to, I am completely bewildered.
So anyway. That was today.
So I am trying to get all this convention stuff together, and it is kind of driving me nuts! It doesn’t seem to matter, which convention, something is always happening to make it difficult! Conventions currently on the lineup (probably attending, not all of them are definite) include: MoCCA, MECAF, AnimeNEXT, Otakon, and SPX, and I am also planning on attending TCAF as a guest. I would like to make a special shout out to MECAF, who has thus far made the convention experience markedly better than the others (immediate response, easy to understand website, reasonably priced tables, etc).
Yes, really, for really real. I think I am finally ready to start updating regularly- at least one page a week. Might move up to two pages once school gets out, in May. So… look for updates on Mondays!
Conventions such and such: I am going to be sharing half a table with Megan Brennan, the author and artist of The Egg, at MoCCA Art Festival this April! We are also planning on getting tables at AnimeNEXT (June) and SPX (September), and we will be visiting TCAF as guests! How lovely.

So I realize that it hadn’t been apparent from the lack of updates on the site, but I’ve been working pretty hard on Chapter 01! I definitely expect it to be done in time for MoCCA (April 9-10). Speaking of which, I’m going to MoCCA! Megan Brennan and I are sharing half a table, and I am so excited! A lot of great artists generally turn up for MoCCA, and I can’t wait to see who else is there this year. :)
I’ve also been pretty busy working on a children’s book about the Starry Knights characters. I don’t know how that’ll turn out, and I’ve only got a couple of paintings done for it, but we’ll see how it goes.

Chapter 02: 33%
Chapter 03: 21%

I realize that uploading one page of the comic and then having nearly a month of inactivity must look terrible- but I am still working on Starry Knights, I swear! Things are going (much) slower than I would have hoped, mainly because of school. However, I am definitely still working on the comic, and updates will come; I justcan’ t say how sporadic they mar or may not be.

That is an excellent question!
Starry Knights will begin running on Friday, October 1. It will update as frequently as I am able to, which hopefully means a couple times a week. I am pretty excited for this; Starry Knights is a few years in the making, and I am so glad to finally be able to share it.
…for an apartment. It is seriously a daunting task trying to find a place to live in New York.
So.. it’s possible we (my two roommates and I) have may have found a place to live; hopefully we will sign the lease tomorrow and then move in later in the week and everything will go well and be sunshine and flowers. That is the plan, anyhow.
Unfortunately, this has taken some of my attention away from Starry Knights… but, it kinda has to. I can’t very well make comics if I have nowhere to live. And it’s not like I’ve got nothing done, right now the projected date for Starry Knights to start running is August 30th. Content will definitely start going up then, but how regularly new pages go up kind of depends on how much I get done before the semester starts/how much time I can spend working on this in addition to schoolwork. The goal is to have a new page every weekday, but updates may come less often if I feel that I need to spend more time focusing on schoolwork.
As for conventions- I will definitely be at SPX, at the Cartoon Allies table. I am also waiting to hear back from New York Anime Fest/Comic Con, so hopefully that goes through.
Progress Report: Prologue: 50% Chapter 01: 40% Chapter 02: 40% Chapter 03: 23% Chapter 04: 20%So this weekend I went up to New York to visit some friends… the heat is unbearable, but I realized that I really miss the city when I am away from it. Fortunately Summer Break is more than half over! (haha, I think my younger self would kill me for saying something like that)
As for Starry Knights… Chapter 01 thumbnails are completely done, and I am halfway through thumbnailing Chapter 02. I was about going to start peniclling Chapter 01 when I realized that if I want the chapter covers to go in front of the chapter, I ought to work on them first (as opposed to my usual process, where the cover is the last thing I create). So.. working on the Chapter 01 cover, then!
As for conventions- I am currently planning on having a table at both New York Anime Fest (which is also now New York Comic Con?) and ManagaNEXT come October. I also plan on attending SPX (in September), but as a member of SVA’s Cartoon Allies. So–! That is what the exciting future holds.
So… in regards to our feature comic, Starry Knights: right now I have the Prologue through Chapter 3 outlined. The Prologue and some of Chapter outlined is thumbnailed. If I continue at this rate, the Prologue and Chapter 1 will definitely be finished by the time Apophenia is done with its run, and so there will be no delay between Apophenia and Starry Knights.
However, right now I am in the middle of apartment hunting and I should be moving in August, but hopefully that won’t take too much time away from Starry Knights?? I have this nagging feeling that moving into a new apartment is going to take longer than I think it will….
